The regular village Coche 1999 was one of the most glorious wines of the evening. We’d been due to compare it with Lafon’s Clos de la Barre 1999 but it was spoilt by the burgundian scourge of premature oxidation so we tasted a Lafon village Meursault 1998 instead that was a little stolid by comparison. And of the two 1996 village Meursaults, the Coche was much livelier, the Lafon flat and rather lacking fruit, suggesting a hint of oxidation. The white burgundy village of Meursault is home to an increasing number of brilliant vignerons, but the two most famous names are Coche-Dury and Comtes Lafon.
A 1992 Coche Meursault Chevalieres village and a Ramonet Chassagne Morgeot 1993 were together in a flight with a completely forgettable Prosper Maufoux Batard-Montrachet as the third wheel. The first time penfolds v chardonnay I tasted Coche-Dury was in 1995, with Danish wine friends and some rather colourful wine people and entrepreneurs. I could now recite the usual Coche estate history and its glorious wines, but I won’t.

Domaine Coche-Dury produces a range of white wines, including village-level, premier cru, and grand cru bottlings.
Raphaël Coche thinks this will prove reminiscent of the domaine's 2001—in so far as the 2001 drank well in its youth, but despite its youthful precocity, it proved surprisingly long lived. Here, the expressiveness of the vintage meets the tensile, age-worthy Coche style to great effect. Nowhere in the Côte de Beaune does the Chardonnay grape do better than it does here. Along the village streets are a succession of little houses belonging to the vineyard workers, mixed with more imposing dwellings. The stone-work on the 53 metre-high church tower looks like it... The 2011 Meursault Village is showing beautifully, offering up a classic bouquet of crisp green orchard fruit, citrus oil, toasted hazelnuts and pastry cream. Medium to full-bodied, elegantly textural and incisive, it's deep and layered at the core, with a racy spine of acidity and a long, penetrating finish. This is a comparatively precocious vintage for Coche-Dury that can already be approached today.
And nowadays, after some unfortunate experience, we wine writers are no longer allowed to taste wines from barrel. For Jean-François Coche the 20-mile trip north to the Château du Clos de Vougeot for one of the fancy Chevaliers du Tastevin dinners where I shared a table with him once was a major outing. Not for the Coches winemaker dinners around the globe. They prefer to stay within spitting distance of their barrels – only a modest proportion of which are new.
He began his career in the 1960's, lending a hand to his father at the family estate, in Meursault, in the Côte de Beaune. In 1973, he inherited the domain, with its 10,5 hectares of grapevines and many appellations, and got to work. The wine lover revealed himself to be a wine genius, constantly reaching for perfection.
This one comes from Les Chaumes, the vines rented from the commune of Meursault. It offers a pale fresh colour, really tight, even a little bit of sandalwood, quite juicy yet with tension, and not too much reduction. Gunflint, popcorn, yellow stone fruit, and crisp minerals. Regal and balanced, definitely exceeding the expectation of the 2018 vintage. The original Coche-Dury plot was rented from either 1985 or 1986. But the Coche Meursault Chevalieres 1992 – my first Coche – was brilliant, taking Meursault to previously unseen levels for the then-relatively-inexperienced Winehog.

It's a bottle that will seriously embarrass many 1er Cru Meursaults; it will also overwhelm many Grand Crus. This extended period on the lees and barrel aging not only prevents oxidation but also contributes to the wines' freshness. The 2018 vintage is renowned for its exceptional growing conditions, resulting in wines that are vibrant and lush on the palate, showcasing excellent aging potential. Back then, it had a tremendous wine list and an extensive selection of Coche; more than ten vintages of the Corton-Charlemagne and multiple other Coche wines were available.
